    Abstract

    The main objectives of this chapter are:
    - to describe the relevance and development of performance management;
    - to define performance management and describe its application as a management intervention for improving organizational performance;
    - to examine how performance management systems operate;
    - to critically assess the purpose and effectiveness of performance management arrangements;
    - to account for the salience of employee absence as a performance issue and examine how it is managed in organizations.
