Abstract
The detectability and accurate measurement of amplitude scintillations can be heavily dependent upon the instrumentation and procedures. Basic design equations are first summarized. The influence of the available C/N0 and the post-detection filtering are analyzed in the context of ensuring a margin M for variance and spectrum estimation. Aperture smoothing effects are analyzed in detail and a simple method for cross path wind measurements is described. Dynamic aspects such as zero crossings and fade durations are reviewed and a method is given to determine the hysteresis range for level crossing analysis.
