Abstract
The article analyses an autobiographical text of Italo Calvino, La Strada di San Giovanni, which reconstruct the landscape of his youth, and through it, his relationship with his father. The aims of the analysis are twofold: to highlight how the exercise of memory through narrative is able to trigger psychological elaboration of experiences and problems which are still active in the present of the writer, and to show the influence of early experience of space in the organization of autobiographical meaning. Drawing on literary critiques of Calvino's work as well on narrative analyses of excerpts of the text, the study proposes to use the text as a model to deepen and refine the cultural psychological understanding of the relationship between narrative, knowledge and experience.
