Abstract
This article presents the threats facing West African marine protected areas as they are perceived by those who manage them. It also outlines the way in which these threats are taken into account in the management process. The main threats identified are uncontrolled fishing, coastal erosion, overexploitation of land resources (mainly wood), and pollution. They are generally poorly translated into management measures, which are aimed more at maintaining the basic operation of the sites than at containing large-scale threats.
