Abstract
Summary: Over the last decade, a group of dedicated social work professionals started grassroots efforts to lead the integration of social work into elite athlete development to address mental health symptoms and disorders and other presented concerns.
Findings: Given the unique challenges facing the elite athlete populations, the versatility and multidisciplinary approach of social work is vitally needed across the sport spectrum. Social workers are able to deeply connect with the emerging and significant need for mental health literacy amongst elite athletes.
Application: This commentary discusses the roles of sport social workers in promoting mental health literacy for elite athletes. This includes recommendations from a sport social worker perspective that can shape the future of mental health literacy for elite athletes.
