    Abstract

In 2023 I was awarded the Belfast Exposed Curatorial Award to curate an exhibition at Belfast Exposed, Northern Ireland.

The show I proposed and curated was a solo exhibition by Zula Rabikowska showcasing her documentary project, “Nothing But a Curtain” about gender identity in Central and Eastern Europe.

“By exhibiting Zula’s powerful, thought-provoking work in Belfast, where the LGBTQI+ community is still marginalised and similarly affected by the turbulent and complicated politics and history of Northern Ireland, I hope to encourage a dialogue about gender equality.

The “Iron Curtain’’ might have been dismantled but in Belfast, peace walls still separate the population and are an ever-present reminder of the past. Even though it is a different history, the experience of navigating borders, and political & social changes transcend boundaries.

Especially in the present political climate of nationalist, homophobic, misogynistic and militaristic attitudes rising in politics globally, I hope Nothing But A Curtain will resonate with the Belfast public and inspire an exchange of stories across borders.”
