    Abstract

“Nothing But a Curtain” solo exhibition by Zula Rabikowska
Curated by Oisín Davies and Vera Hadzhiyska for London College of Communication (UAL)

This multi-media exhibition seeks to challenge cultural and gender stereotypes about the former “Eastern Bloc” by documenting the experiences of post-Soviet women, non-binary, genderfluid and transgender people from the region.

In the summer of 2021, Zula Rabikowska travelled across 10 countries, tracing the border known as the “Iron Curtain”. She photographed and interviewed 104 people about their personal experiences of gender and womanhood.

I had the pleasure to support Zula throughout the development of her work both as a fellow artist and curator. This meant I was able to contribute to the curation of her exhibition with ideas and site-specific installations which conceptually fit with the project and enhanced the viewer experience and emotional impact of the exhibition.

“Nothing But a Curtain” is comprised of photographs, moving image, archival images and documents, alongside installations which allows for a plurality of voices and experiences to be seen and heard.
