    Abstract

Despite a sustained increase in fishing effort for the last years in Senegal, fish landings indicate a tendency to decrease. With increasing domestic and foreign demand for fish products, aquaculture is considered more and more as a possible alternative to maintain the reduced level of supply and pressure on marine resources. That in context, shrimp farming seems to offer interesting prospects. The economic and social advantages would be beneficial to coastal communities particularly for creating jobs and generating revenue to stop rural exodus. However, the environmental disruptions risk spoiling the economic performance and public policy makers to compel associate populations to any shrimp farming project.
