Abstract
Professor Barile, one of the keynote speakers at the World Organisation of Systems and Cybernetics congress (27th 30 September 2021), gave a stimulating presentation entitled ‘From Homo Sapiens to Homo Digitalis’ in which he argued that we have entered a period of dataism1. By this he means we are becoming so reliant upon digital technology that it is in danger of becoming a alternative ‘real world’. In many areas we are substituting fundamental human relationships such as human-to-human communication and human contact with a digital go-between. The following essay reflects my response to Professor Barile’s address that I hope will add another voice in raising our awareness of the impact that the ever-evolving digital world is having upon human beings.
