    Abstract

    The purpose of this chapter is accordingly first to highlight key sequences of development of maritime activities and their contribution to the maritime heritage. This is followed by a brief evaluation of the maritime heritage in its contemporary manifestations, organized along the lines of major marine sectors. Finally, the implications of maritime development and the maritime heritage for the present and future of marine resource and environmental management are considered.
