Abstract
FILIPINOS, more than most, love a good soap opera or telenovela. But with elections here looming next year, the far-fetched plotlines of family sagas, riddled with greed, betrayal and extravagant quantities of hairspray, are no longer restricted to production companies and cable networks. ‘The Punisher’, also known as Rodrigo Duterte, has been our President since 2016. The constitution says he must stand down next year, but Duterte is neither shy nor retiring. At the last moment, he opted to run for the Senate, ditching an initial plan to stand for the vice- presidency (a position with its own ballot in Philippines) – which would have pitted him against Sara, his own daughter and no-nonsense mayor of Davao, his hometown.
