    Abstract

A discussion on the principles for assessing the physical fitness requirements for the workforce, including offshore and onshore workers covers the assessment of what offshore/onshore functions realistically require a physical fitness component; an analysis of the ergonomic elements of jobs/tasks where physical contribution is required and how this may be effectively quantified; evaluation of data such that it can be used to define the human capability measurements needed to define functional capability; design of simplest FCE testing facilities and procedures; and validation within oil industry by application to an offshore and onshore installation; composition of generic industry guidelines for physical fitness requirements and functional capacity evaluation. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 19th World Petroleum Congress (Madrid, Spain 6/29/2008-7/3/2008).
