    Abstract

Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) is a revolutionary technique that allows scientists to obtain three dimensional image of surfaces on an atomic scale. Recently, SPM microscopes have become commercially available at a price affordable by many universities, thus opening up the possibility of including SPM in undergraduate and post graduate courses. In this article, we consider the historical development of the technique and its applications in materials science and biochemistry.
