Abstract
This paper explores the intersections of temporary urbanism with the performative aspects of urban life, examining how ephemeral interventions act as platforms for cultural expression, engagement, and the revaluation of urban spaces. It argues that temporary urbanism, through its transient and strategic projects, not only addresses immediate urban challenges but also serves as a vibrant stage for the performance of local cultures and social interactions. By exploring the historic role of public space as a space for exhibiting and performing social and political life, the study discusses Urban Living Labs as a method, highlighting their role in staging cultural life and fostering a deeper connection between citizens and the urban landscape. At the heart of our exploration is the recognition of these interventions as both artistic and cultural performances that invite urban dwellers to participate in the co-creation of their environment. This paper underscores how temporary urbanism initiatives stimulate local culture and awareness, transforming passive spaces into active realms of cultural expression and community involvement. Through case studies, we illustrate how these temporary interventions not only challenge conventional urban planning approaches but also promote a culturally enriched, inclusive, and dynamic participatory urbanism. Furthermore, the study highlights the significance of these spatial practices in enhancing the value and perception of urban spaces, encouraging residents to engage more in depth with their city. By spotlighting the cultural dimensions of temporary urbanism, this paper contributes to an enriched understanding of how temporary urban practices can ignite significant cultural and spatial transformations, ultimately leading to a more engaged, aware, and vibrant urban community.
