While internships and placements have traditionally dominated sport management provision, these models can be constrained by uneven access, variable quality and limited alignment with a rapidly evolving sector. Expanded forms of WIL offer more inclusive and pedagogically robust alternatives. Project-based industry collaborations allow students to address live organisational challenges through research-informed solutions. Consultancy studios simulate professional advisory environments in which students deliver services to sport organisations under academic supervision, strengthening professional identity and client-facing skills. Entrepreneurial partnerships enable students to design and test sport-focused ventures, fostering innovation and commercial awareness. Micro-placements and virtual internships further extend access through flexible and geographically distributed engagement. Across these approaches, WIL develops essential sport management capabilities including stakeholder engagement, strategic thinking, ethical awareness and reflective practice, ensuring graduates enter the profession with confidence, adaptability and applied expertise.
