Abstract

This book provides a thorough analysis of the history of the European Union explaining its origins and development over time. It will contextualize the history of the EU within key processes shaping European 20th century history including: the two world wars and the Cold War; globalization and the rise of emerging countries; failed and competing attempts at European international cooperation and integration; transatlantic relations; as well as anti-European movements and ideas including developments leading to Brexit. Further, unlike other textbooks currently on the market, this textbook highlights the role individuals, member states, transnational actors and European institutions played in shaping European integration in the EU.
