Abstract

This article explores the relationship between professional identity, transition and retraining, drawing on research into military to civilian transition and Initial Teacher Education. It considers how individuals navigate significant career change, the challenges associated with identity reconstruction and the implications for teacher recruitment and retention. The article argues that retraining is not simply a process of acquiring new skills but often involves a complex renegotiation of identity, belonging and professional purpose. The discussion highlights the importance of recognising prior experience and supporting individuals as they move between professional fields.
