    Abstract

2023 saw the 10-year anniversary of the release of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, developed by The Chinese Room, a development studio that grew out of the University of Portsmouth's games research group, and designed by Dr Peter Howell, course lead for the BA (Hons) Computer Games Design course and head of the Advanced Games Research Group. To celebrate this milestone and to offer a designer's retrospective commentary on the game and its development process, Peter, along with game design lecturers and researchers Dr Matthew Higgins and Adam Jerrett, presented a three-part series streaming the game via Twitch. Alongside the gameplay, we discuss aspects of game design, the player experience in horror, game development and production issues, level art, animation, AI, and more, all informed by insider knowledge and designer intent.
