Research output: Non-textual form › Artefact

Abstract

Still Wakes the Deep is a narrative-driven, horror-inspired game developed by The Chinese Room, the studio which was home-grown within the University of Portsmouth in the early 2010s and led by then-lecturer Dan Pinchbeck. This game was the last title that Dan was the Creative Director and lead writer on before he left the studio to pursue other creative avenues and demonstrates the growth and maturation of the studio from its Dear Esther days, incorporating ideas and inspiration from earlier titles Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

In this full playthrough stream of the game recorded in 2026 to precede a guest speaker visit from Dan Pinchbeck, we discuss aspects of game and level design, the player experience in horror, art direction and animation, and various other parts of the experience, all streamed live via the Computer Games UoP official Twitch channel and preserved for posterity on our Youtube channel.
