    Abstract

The lack of serious scholarship on musical theatre is a familiar lament, but if we keep on singing it, we may miss that the subject is thriving. Musical theatre is an increasingly popular subject for university study and conferences on it have been a growing feature of the academic calendar on both sides of the Atlantic. Scholarly literature, as we shall see, has developed strongly in range and complexity.
