Abstract

This issue brings together a wide range of research papers and essays examining the fundamental issues facing the transition of the built environment toward sustainable development through innovation. The papers are upgraded versions of selected publications from the 2023 International Conference on “Construction Digitalisation for Sustainable Development: Transformation through Innovation,” jointly organized by Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, Manchester Metropolitan University, and the Vietnam BIM Academic Forum, with support from international academics. The twenty featured papers, rigorously peer-reviewed, reflect the highest standards of scholarship and innovation. They explore various sustainable development initiatives, covering topics such as disruptive technologies—AI, blockchain, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Scan-to-BIM, and the Internet of Things—and their applications in the built environment. The papers also address smart housing, adaptive reuse of urban and historic spaces, and the comprehensive life cycle of construction projects across planning, design, construction, and operation stages. Additionally, they explore human resources development and its transformation toward sustainable practices. This special issue serves as a valuable resource for academics, urban planners, architects, engineers, and others interested in understanding the complex challenges and opportunities surrounding sustainable development of the built environment in selected countries. It promotes learning through shared values, knowledge exchange, and best practices. The research results stimulate innovative ideas, encourage critical thinking, and contribute to the ongoing discourse shaping the future of the built environment.
