    Abstract

In 2017, the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology celebrated its 50th anniversary. The cover image chosen for this anniversary year was of the northern portal of the Chabrières Tunnel, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France. The tunnel had been recently excavated through steeply dipping Jurassic limestones and marls using drill and blast methods. This paper provides more context to the engineering geology and construction of this tunnel with details of the geological ground conditions and developed ground model.
