Abstract
Several institutions in the UK and Europe have discussed the appraisal of teaching/lecturing skills in education establishments. Within schools, military establishments and some further education establishments appraisal has already been introduced, especially during teacher/instructor training. The management and the Unions within the UK education (and Portsmouth Polytechnic) have expressed different views, although both have made similar assumptions concerning the aims of appraisal and the need for appraisal to affect promotion and pay. Both have tended to be negative.
