The Map Room: fort as time machine

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

‘The Map Room’, presents Portsmouth island, its ring of forts and fortifications as a constellation of mapped stories. Produced and curated by Nicola Crowson and Tina Bird Wallbridge, Architects and academics who see themselves as physical novelists who challenge traditional notions of mapping and architectural site analysis. The Map Room features 28 muslin panels, suspended in a hidden space within Portsmouth historic dockyard. The mappings were produced as research practice in conjunction with the students enrolled in the 'Future Architectures'; M.Arch in Architecture at the University of Portsmouth. For the students the process of working with, creating and drawing maps was used as a catalyst to understand place and explore a position on architecture.
