    Abstract

This chapter aims to provide a valuable guide for the development of an efficient yet user-friendly system for semantically searching and browsing digital objects with the use of a suitable metadata database. This system will make use of the KEEP Emulation Framework (EF) to render via emulation the digital objects selected by the user. The chapter starts by covering several aspects relating to the nature of the system and the different type of users involved in the interaction process with it. A list is then drawn up of initial assumptions concerning the nature of the system, and the dependencies it possesses with external components. A list of functional and non-functional requirements is provided of the browsing system. Requi¬rements of other components, such as the EF or the metadata database, are not covered. There is also a set of scenarios and related UML activity diagrams given that are needed to aid the identification of the functional requirements. A design analysis of the browsing system is finally included, with a focus on the role and behaviour of the different internal and external components for the tasks accomplishment of the browsing system. Due to the strictly technical nature of the aspects covered here, any feature of legal or organisational nature is beyond scope and is therefore not covered.
