Abstract

This Special Issue, ‘Latin American Performance, Activism and Public Space’, explores the interrelationships between performance and activism in Latin America and their connection and resonance within the public sphere today. The relationship between performance and activism has a long history in Latin America. These artistic practices are closely linked with social move- ments and sociopolitical developments and their beliefs. Focusing on Latin American themes, but which were influenced by the development of new artistic disciplines in the United States and Europe, since the 1960s, social and cultural transformation has been reflected through the connection of perform- ing arts and social movements expressed in the public space. These forms of artistic expression emphasize the possibility of proposing embodied practices understood as vital actions in which the body generates meanings, rites of passage and new forms of repertoire of collective action.
