    Abstract

This article concerns the definition of applied puppetry in relation to education and community contexts. The discussion will engage in debates about the practice of the puppeteer with groups in workshops. Reference is made to some examples of practice and personal reflections of experiences, workshops and projects. The points made connect with themes of terminology, ethics and workshop practice. The question considered in relation to this research is; where can we find the definition through the practice of applied puppetry?
For twenty years now I have been using puppetry in a number of unusual settings to engage groups in work that could be considered applied puppetry. This work opened up many different and surprising results in workshops and projects. I am reflecting on this work critically and developing an advanced study of puppetry as part of applied theatre for puppeteers and academics.
