Abstract
This entry explores trans students in sport and physical education (PE), holding relevance to various educational contexts due to the contested nature of inclusion in traditionally sex-segregated spaces. In the first section, a discussion of the umbrella label trans is provided in relation to the definitions of gender and biological sex, giving context on these often-misunderstood terms. The concept of cisnormativity is also explored here to contextualize trans people’s experience in society. The next section is an overview and exploration of sport and PE, with a particular focus on the reliance on binary models of sex/gender in these contexts. The impact this has on trans students is then analyzed in the final section of the entry.
