Abstract
Reports the results of a questionnaire survey of 155 UK executives, drawn from the Financial Analysis Made East (FAME) UK company database (10.2% response rate), to test how these executives perceive the importance of the environment sectors for strategic information scanning in different industries and to examine how they perceive the stability of the business environment in which their companies operate. Reveals that they perceive the immediate-task environment information as being more strategically important than far-general environment information, but this perception tends to differ widely from industry to industry. Argues that what executives need is an efficient tool to assist them in the task of information scanning and to offer practical guidance. Concludes that such a tool should be designed to allow for the industry-specific nature of the information need.
