    Abstract

This executive summary presents the findings from IES research on behalf of the Education Training Foundation (ETF). ETF commissioned IES to investigate how further education providers used advanced practitioner roles to improve teaching, learning and assessment.

Little was known before the study about the impact of the roles, despite anecdotal commentary describing the benefits of these roles for the development of practitioners and their effects on teaching, learning and assessment.

The executive summary considers both the use and impact of advanced practitioners to date, drawing on in-depth case studies and a survey of 19 provider organisations. Whilst highlighting effective practice, it also offers learning points for providers seeking more effective ways to work with teachers, coaches, assessors and trainers to develop their practice.
