    Abstract

"Variations" is a group photography exhibition showcasing work in progress by 30 students on the MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at University of Arts London

The exhibition was curated by Vera Hadzhiyska and took place from 18 - 20 June 2022 in Safehouse 1 and 2 in Peckham, London

"Variations" is a group exhibition of multi-layered work produced as a result of an intense period of reassessment, reinterpretation and experimentation away from the artists’ own pre-existing approaches and narratives.

The artists from MAPJD collective are approaching documentary photography and photojournalism in a multidisciplinary way, using non-linear approaches and creating work that will touch and shake you in many ways.

The exhibition allows for a variety of moods to occur, spanning from light-hearted fun and games, shifting to the spiritual realm, then confronting personal and family relationships and traumas, questioning ideas of home, memory and identity, introducing community, cultures and migration experiences, as well as shining a light on the the heavy burdens of war and its impact on people’s lives and society.

The exhibition presents work in progress as the artists navigate the many variations their work goes through in order to reach its final state.
