Abstract
Bullying or harassment in the workplace has become a major occupational stressor, creating enormous legal and financial problems for organizations. Many of the early research projects in this field were carried out in the Scandinavian countries, but this field of research has grown very fast over the last 5-10 years. The terminology for this phenomenon has been widespread, with different countries attributing different labels: in the US and Canada they have referred to it variously as workplace harassment; employee abuse, emotional abuse, mistreatment at work and petty tyranny (Ashforth, 1994); in Germany, Austria and Scandinavia as mobbing; and in the UK and Ireland as bullying.
