    Abstract

[Author declined to make full text available]
There is a significant change occurring within the broadcast industry and the business is encountering external challenges, and also new prospects, arising from the convergence of related industries and technologies. Simultaneously, this business sector is transitioning from the linear processing of assets (audio, video and text based material), to non sequential procedures based upon digital technology.
Therefore, this is a period of considerable adjustment within the business, and this thesis provides a rare opportunity to examine and evaluate the impact that the introduction of contemporary technology will have on an industry. The study suggests how the industry standard 'system' of media arrangement will be transformed by technological innovation, and identifies which components of the emerging system will be influential in inspiring change.
This study also reports on a review of the working practices of those directly and indirectly involved in the functional use, administration and maintenance of the systems that support the media management processes; proposes a collaborative approach to the organisation of 'change'; points out the likely corollary for those directly involved in media activities; and describes the participatory and mutual practices that should be considered by service providers.
There are contributions to knowledge by describing and modelling the changes as they have taken place, outlining the prospective changes and how they should be constructively adopted, and also in providing an insight into how metadata may be identified and more beneficially used within an environment such as a broadcasting station.
