9th Asian Conference on Cultural Studies

Activity: Participating in or organising an event typesParticipation in conference

In interdisciplinary fashion, my presentation ‘Language, Gender and Orientalist Rhetoric in American Writing on the US Colonization of the Philippines (1898–1929)’ explored both creative artefacts and critical theories (and the strong affiliations between them), covering topics (such as the rhetorical and linguistic characteristics of Orientalist discourse) that I believe will diversify CCI’s research profile while also harmonising with and extending current research activities.By participating in the international research community represented by IAFOR, I will be fulfilling certain key aims of CCI’s Research and Innovation Strategy 2015-2020 by entering ‘active local-to-global creative, cultural, digital and collaborative partnerships" and benefiting from ‘developing staff and student engagement with external organisations leading to mutually beneficial relationships.’ I made some useful contacts while at the conference for the purpose of making an external funding bid to the AHRC Leadership programme in 2019 that would establish an international network of scholars focusing on Orientalist language and rhetoric. The emphasis of my paper on resources by which writers can contest oppressive, ethnocentric and authoritarian modes of discourse would also conform to CCI’s commitment to enhancing democratic citizenship, specifically with regard to ‘social inclusion, civic life, equality and diversity’.
