Talk entitled 'Be careful what you wish for: The problem of researching student voice'

This key note talk considered the rising popularity of participatory involvement by students in learning and development processes. Buzz words such as ‘student-led’ and ‘student voice’ were cited. However, the term 'voice' was brought into question. Particularly when the findings from research that promotes student voice from the margins of education are rejected or disputed.

Consideration was given to the ease at which we as researchers can blame institutional attitudes but a question was posed whether some of the responsibility for ensuring a socially just models of research lies with us - the researchers.

Perhaps, it was suggested, if we are engaging directly in work that supports the idea of social equity then we, as researchers have a responsibility to ensure our practice is ‘fit for purpose’ and representative of the groups with whom we work.
