The main concern of this workshop was with mapping the changing boundaries of administrative units, from parishes and communes up to nations and empires, as a framework for studying the European past.

The workshop was held at the European University Institute, Florence, Italy on June 2nd to 4th, 2000. It was for a limited number of participants, but reported back to a meeting at the International Congress of Historical Sciences in Oslo on Thursday 10 August 2000.

It was funded by the European Science Foundation under their Exploratory Workshops in the Humanities Programme.

There are four kinds of document associated with this event.
1) The Information about the meeting itself; Introduction, programme, goals and participants
2) Background reading; 7 papers submitted by workshop participants as 'background reading' about their projects. They were not necessarily written especially for the workshop.
3) Country Surveys; 14 reports as answers to a standard questionnaire
4) Project Reports; 18 reports as a set of answers to a standard questionnaire
