This one day conference brought together map librarians who are digitising their collections with academic researchers using historical maps as sources for GIS systems and historical database. The focus was on novel uses of historical mapping in a digital environment.

This conference was a special session of the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers. It was supported by the New York Public Library, Cartography Associates and Old Maps Online and was hosted by The New York Public Library.

The Key note presentation, 'Finding and Referencing Old Maps Online', was given jointly by David Rumsey (Cartography Associates), Humphrey Southall (University of Portsmouth) and Petr Pridal (Klokan Technologies).
Session 1 focused on 'Building rich resources', Session 2 was entitled 'Enabling Access', Session 3: covered 'Extracting and Defining Features' and session 4 was on 'Digital Gazetteers'.
