When translation meets technologies: How translators can live happily with digital tools

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

In this talk I will deal with the question of how the practice of translation has been influenced by the recent advancements in translation technologies. In particular I will focus on two examples of technologies which are noticeably (and rather worryingly) influencing the practice of translation: online crowdsourcing and machine translation. I will also present the results of our recent focus group research with 16 UK project managers, who discussed how they are embracing and, at the same time, coping with new technologies in their practices. The outcomes of the research corroborate my argument that the translation industry is currently standing at an important crossroad where technology usage needs to be assessed and reviewed carefully to realise sustainable development of the profession.
