Impact: Cultural & Creative Impacts
- Professor Bradley Beaven (Participant)
Description of impact
This research is drawn from published material authored by Beaven, Bell and James and will be used to electronically map the social and cultural institutions, traditions and folklore of sailortown. A prototype electronic map/app has been developed and a soft launch was held in November 2015 as part of the AHRC 'Being Human Festival'. The app will be finalised in June 2016 after testing is complete.
Who is affected
The app will facilitate the pathways to impact dimension when applying for RCUK funding (and Swedish research councils as we are in partnership with the University of Gothenburg). We are also in partnership with the Portsmouth Archives Records Service who can supply photographs free of charge. We are also talking with Social Geographers in Portsmouth, Plymouth and Liverpool to replicate the idea and explore sailortown in a comparative fashion. The general public will benefit from down loading and using the GIS app as they can access historical material as they complete the 'sailortown walks' They can also upload their own memories, photographs and documents to the app and engage with the creating and showcasing of the social and cultural institutions of sailortown.
