Teaching Young People European Studies

Description of impact

Community engagement and outreach via the delivery of European Commission (TYPES funding) and ESRC-funded European simulation outreach events to A-level students in collaboration with UACES.
Led and collaboratively delivered simulations involving the following institutions: Southdowns College, Waterlooville, Hampshire; Newstead Wood School, Orpington, Kent; Burnside College, Newcastle; Sacred Heart High School, Newcastle; Durham School, Newcastle; Churchill Community College, Newcastle; Loughborough College; Ellowes Hall Sports College, Dudley.
Over 150 pupils have been involved across all of the simulation events organised to date.
These external simulation events aim to:
encourage participation in HE;
contribute to smoothing progression and transition to HE;
sustain the profile of European Studies within university curricula;
raise awareness amongst secondary school pupils of the impact of Brexit negotiations on European citizenship and the migrant crisis.
Linked to these simulations, collaborated with UACES in October 2017 to apply for the European Commission’s EU-wide contest for a prestigious Altiero Spinelli Prize for Outreach: Spreading Knowledge about Europe.
