Description of impact

This partnership aims to support the professionalization of the Nigerian film industry through the development of a curriculum toolkit to be launched at AFRIFF 2018, and short specialised training course, to be delivered in partnership between the University of Portsmouth (UoP) and Lagos State University (LASU).

Who is affected

Responding to the skills gaps and shortages identified in the “Creative Skills in Sub-Saharn Africa” report by the British Council, this project aims to support an increase in graduate preparedness through the introduction of skills training, increased exposure to international best practice and UK expertise in the cultural sector and education.

Narrative

This will be achieved through a 2 week, tailor-made exchange experience in Portsmouth, designed for film studies lecturers from Lagos State University. The film studies programmes in the Department of Theatre Arts and Music at LASU are 80% theoretical, and it is anticipated that the opportunity to experience the delivery of a practically focussed curriculum, to learn how to use key items of equipment and software, to be introduced to international benchmarks in creative education,identify latest UK industry trends. will all support the Nigerian creative educators to reflect on, revise and develop their own course design.

This project focuses on sharing best practice in course design. Staff from UoP and LASU will work together to co-produce a toolkitto inspireand assist academic staff in institutions across Lagos State, and beyond to prepare graduates with the skills required by industry (participants in the research for the Creative Education and Skills in Nigeria Report highlighted film to be the sector most lacking in the skills required).

We propose that this toolkit is launched at the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in 2018, and copies given to each Public HEI in Lagos State in order to reach the widest possible audience.

Immediate impact (participants):2 (or 3) academic staff working together (Two from LASU and Three from UoP). Four students from UoP supporting the delivery of the training sessions.
Secondary impact (immediate colleagues and students): Seven academic staff and over two hundred students at LASU, who will apply their learning the design of the film studies courses at LASU, train their colleagues in the use of key equipment and software – building confidence in using professional studios to support teaching.
Tertiary impact (higher education providers): estimated thirty five film studies courses across public Higher Education Providers in Lagos State (to receive a copy of the toolkit)
Tertiary impact (young professionals): c. 100attendees to launch event at AFRIFF, likely to be young professionals. Toolkit to be hosted on a digital platform, e.g. AFRIFF website/ Afrinolly.

- Visit to Creative Skillset, to find out about UK Creative Skills Accreditation Scheme.
- Industry visit to identify latest trends in UK film production.
- Workshop to develop toolkit
- Meeting with Creative Careers team to see systems for supporting industry placements
