Institute of Biomedical & Biomolecular Sciences
Organisational unit: Research Centre
The Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Sciences (IBBS) undertakes internationally-leading, cross disciplinary research into the basis of health and disease in order to achieve real-world impact. The Institute comprises staff from the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences providing a focus for collaborative projects spanning fundamental and applied research areas.
Our research is organised into programme areas ranging from molecular, cellular and organismal, through to human health. The breadth of expertise within IBBS allows us to productively engage with a wide range of colleagues in our University thematic areas of Health and Wellbeing and Future and Emerging Technologies. We have outstanding collaborations with research groups across the UK and strong international partnerships world-wide, particularly in Europe and the United States of America.
IBBS encompasses several word-leading research groups including the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence and The European Xenopus Resource Centre. We are supported by external research grants totalling over £10m, principally from the Research Councils (BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC and NERC), the Wellcome Trust and more specialised biomedical charities, the European Union and a range of industrial companies. There are outstanding facilities for research at the molecular and cellular levels, with on-site access to a range of model organisms.
We maximise the impact of our research and innovation through our dedicated Research and Innovation Services, supporting knowledge exchange, commercialisation and public engagement.
