School of Mathematics & Physics
Organisational unit: Department
The School of Mathematics and Physics challenges the way we think about and use numbers. We're driven to solve technological, environmental and societal problems through our research and teaching.
From pure, applied and industrial mathematics to quantum theory and particle physics, our school has many research pathways.
Our school produces excellent research with practical applications, and annual increases in research outputs. We're a leader among young universities — 61% of our mathematics and 89% of our physics research outputs were rated as internationally excellent in REF 2014, placing us as the joint best performing new university in the country.
Our research impact is varied – we've improved how hospitals allocate beds and medical equipment, and enhanced climate resilience in cities. On a lighter note, we've deciphered what, mathematically-speaking, makes the perfect cup of coffee and invented a new way to pour the perfect Guinness.
Our areas of expertise include:
- Industrial mathematics
- Applied mathematics, nonliner and complex systems
- Quantum information and sensing technologies
