Dr Afshin Anssari-Benam

Senior Lecturer, Lecturer

Afshin Anssari-Benam

I obtained a BSc in Mechanical Engineering, followed by an MSc in Biomechanics. I received a PhD in Medical Engineering from Queen Mary, University of London in 2012 where I investigated structure-function relationships in a connective tissue, namely the aortic valve. I was a postdoctoral research associate at University College London (UCL) from 2011 to 2013, before joining the University of Portsmouth as a lecturer. I am currently a member of the Mechanical Behaviour of Materials (MBM) Research Group at the School of Engineering.

Research Interests

Multi-scale biomechanics of soft tissues

 • Experimental analysis and mathematical modelling of:

(i) Tissue-level behaviour

(ii) Micromechanics of the Extra-Cellular Matrix (ECM)

Arterial haemodynamics

 • Experimental modelling and in vitro investigation of pulsatile arterial flows in atherosclerotic arteries:

(i) First principle diagnosis procedures and technology

(ii) Arterial wall shear stress-circumferential stress waves interaction

Cell-mediated tissue engineering strategies for tissue regeneration and repair

 • Cellular biomechanics

 • Development of cell-seeding scaffolds

 • Mechanically induced cellular ECM metabolism
