Mr Carl Hartford

Senior Teaching Fellow

Relations

Summary

I am a Senior Fellow within the Faculty of Business and Law currently based at the RAF College, Cranwell.

A former senior officer in the RAF, I have been within the academic world since 2015 and my main researtch interest revloves around exploring the difficulties that organisations have in putting their leadership values into practice.

I am currently in the final stages of my PhD which is exploring the extent to which the RAF is able to employ its primary leadership philosophy, known as mission command, and the potential barriers that it faces in translating its doctrine into practice.

Biography

My first career was as a Navigator with the RAF where I amassed over 4000 flying hrs during a career spanning over 20 years.  In addition to flying appointments, I also spent time as a leadership instructor at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and as a Senior Leadership Instructor at the RAF College, Cranwell.  As a senior officer I spent 3 years working within HQ Air Command as a strategy development officer and my final tour in the Service was as the Training Requirements Authority, responsible for overseeing all the the RAF's Generic Education and Training requirements.

During my time in the Service I was fortunate enough to be sponsored through an MBA with Henley Business School and was awarded a fellowship to undertake a PhD with Leeds University Business School.

Teaching Responsibilities

I currently teach on a variety of modules at the RAF College including Air Power, International Relations, International Humanitarian Law and Leadership.
