Biography

Before joining Portsmouth in 2018 I held positions at Birkbeck, University of London (where I was part of the team developing the successful launch of the Joint MBA programme with Central St. Martins) and Henley Business School, where I also held a Faculty role as Director of Postgraduate Programmes (Business & Management). I have taught at Cranfield School of Management, Kings College London and held a visiting position at the University of Malta.

I hold an ESRC funded PhD from Cranfield School of Management where I carried out research on how people perceive health risks and the growth in ‘the worried well’. I completed an MRes in Management Research Methods from Cranfield and an MSc in International Marketing from Strathclyde Business School. My undergraduate degree was from the Department of Computer Science at the University of York. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the Royal Statistical Society.

In 2012 I won the Market Research Society Award for Innovation in Research Methodology for developing cost effective approaches to identifying rare samples in health research. I have since twice been nominated for the MRS Silver Medal. I regularly give talks to organisations and industry groups on issues relating to the digital economy, privacy and regulation. I have also worked with a number of public bodies including the UK Cabinet Office.

Prior to my academic career I held a number of industry roles. I was Associate Director at UBS, and held senior commercial roles in the technology sector, including as Marketing Director and CEO. I have worked in the UK, Switzerland and the United States.

Research Interests

My research interests are focussed on macro-level phenomena relating to the digital economy and public policy. Recent projects have focussed on customer privacy and big data, virtualisation of work, the sharing economy and AI. My current research has two streams. The first relates to the opportunities and challenges presented by ageing populations in the digital economy (a recent paper on this topic can be accessed here).  The second relates to the how the nature of evidence influences the spread of online disinformation, particularly when communicated through social media.
