Biography

I am a Chartered Geotechnical Engineer with degrees from the University of Exeter - Camborne School of Mines and the University of Nottingham. Prior to joining the University of Portsmouth, I taught soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering at all academic levels on the Civil Engineering programmes at the University of Salford. During this time I was also responsible for the management of the undergraduate Civil Engineering programmes and Head of the Structures and Geotechnics Research Group.

I have professional experience working with the civil engineering contractor, Taylor Woodrow Construction and as a geotechnical engineering consultant, for Golder Associates (UK) Ltd. Throughout my academic career I have been actively engaged with consultancy activities, with work ranging from underground and surface excavation geotechnical design and advice, to offshore foundation structures.

I have research interests in all aspects of rock mechanics and soil mechanics, with a smattering of structural mechanics (masonry arches) and environmental engineering (water and wastewater treatment and contaminated land), but at the core of my research are solutions to real-world problems using physical and numerical models, much of which has been stimulated by industry.

Research Interests

Numerical modelling of discontinuous media; Physical modelling; Rock and soil behaviour through field and laboratory testing.
