Mr Gerry Banks
I am an Associate Senior Lecturer in the subject group of Marketing and Sales. I am a Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality.
I take a close interest in all matters associated with the Supervised Work Experience (SWE) of students on undergraduate programmes in Hospitality and Tourism Management. I was instrumental in establishing the Industrial Tutors Group for placement tutors of universities offering Hospitality and Tourism courses. This body has advanced the delivery, assessment and integration of SWE significantly.
For 14 years until taking semi-retirement in 2008, I was Course Leader for undergraduate programmes in Hospitality Management. Since 2008 I have worked for the University as an Associate Lecturer on a 0.6 contract, with responsibilities including teaching and the role of Year Two Tutor for Hospitality undergraduates.
I have been an External Examiner for Hospitality programmes at a number of universities including the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University), and most recently at Sheffield Hallam University. I have also been involved in a number of international collaborations related to undergraduate and postgraduate Hospitality and Tourism course provision in Bulgaria and France, and have been invited to lecture in these and other countries including Finland and Hungary.
My research interests focus on two areas. Firstly, contemporary issues in Gastronomy especially the evolution of customer demand in diverse markets, and secondly, the development of SWE as a means of accelerating learning and enhancing employability.
