Mr Harald Hamley
I am a Teaching Fellow in the Operations and Systems Management subject group. My areas of expertise are logistics, operations, supply chain management, project management and organisational change management.
I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and I am working towards a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
I spent many years in industry working in manufacturing and logistics, where my achievements included setting up a successful multinational joint venture and the roll-out of ERP systems across Europe.
I am able to bring to my teaching a wealth of practical experience in logistics and supply chain management, together with a knowledge of business re-engineering and financial reorganisation.
I enjoy lecturing and passing on my knowledge gained as a practitioner to our students at Portsmouth Business School, as well as raising the profile of logistics and supply chain management as rewarding professions that require not only knowledge of the latest technology but also people skills.
I began teaching at the University in Autumn 2019. Before joining academia I worked in industry for many years in manufacturing and logistics: designing systems, undertaking planning and managing production, warehouses and freight.
I was European Logistics Manager for KPG, an international joint venture supplying over 9,000 customers in the printing industry. At the time, KPG was the world’s largest supplier of graphic materials. I set up the joint venture processes and I was responsible for the supply chain, including the warehouse network and freight.
In 2005 KPG was bought out by Kodak, which I joined as European Supply Chain Director for their Graphics Division, where I merged into the company the supply chains and systems of KPG and 3 other acquisitions. I later implemented Kodak’s SAP business operations software systems in 10 European countries.
These roles helped me to develop my perspective from a focus on logistics and the supply chain to a broader view across the commercial, financial, legal and human resources aspects of the business.
I had been a member of CILT for a number of years and in 2014 I took the opportunity to join its staff as Regional Officer for Southern England. Along with recruiting members and companies, I promoted logistics as a career and the services of the institute until 2018. I remain involved with the Institute as Chairman of its annual awards scheme that recognises excellence and disseminates best practice in the profession.
My work for the Institute brought me into contact with the University of Portsmouth, which in turn encouraged me to study again. My first degree had been in Physics at Balliol College, Oxford. In 2019 I completed my Master’s degree in Logistics at the University of Wales Trinity St David, graduating with distinction.
I teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level on the following modules: Business Operations and Systems Management; Business Logistics Management; Risk and Resilience; Supply Chain Strategy and Project Management.
