Mrs Joanne Atkinson
Postgraduate Course Director
I am a Principal Lecturer and Postgraduate Course Director at Portsmouth Law School. I am a qualified solicitor with expertise in corporate and commercial law. My research focuses on commercial law and consumer protection, specifically the regulation of consumer credit. I have recently joined the editorial board of Goode's Consumer Credit Law and Practice.
I completed my LLB at the University of Nottingham before taking the LPC at the University of Law. I trained as a solicitor in private practice before moving to the in-house legal department of Zurich Financial Services where I advised on a range of issues including contract drafting, new business initiatives, regulatory compliance, consumer law, resolution of commercial disputes and intellectual property. In 2003 I was appointed company secretary for Zuirch's UK general insurance business, comprising some 60 companies. I joined the University in 2011, having previously lectured at the University of Law in London.
I teach Corporate Law & Governance and Commercial & Consumer Law on the LLM, and Company Law and Commercial Law on undergraduate law courses. I also teach negotiation skills. I am currently the Company Law Examiner for ICSA: The Governance Institute.
My research focuses primarily on the regulation of consumer credit. I am currently investigating the use of artificial intelligence in the assessment of creditworthiness.
